music

How do you consume ( enjoy, listen to,buy, download , concerts, mech ) in the 21st century ?.What are your attitudes to paying vs downloading ? . physical mp3 legal

today I consume music in a number of ways, most notable however I would use the internet due to the vast amounts of music now available on the internet online music is a growing music highlight by website such as spotify and grooveshark .also many bands are now YouTube partners meaning they get money through ad on videos   . this alone represent a  significant change to the music industry . however despite this choice of music online . I still pay a lot of money to go to gigs because i love the atmospheres at gigs i just think they are amazing, sure at home you can relax and understand the music but at a concert you mosh and jump about and lock arms with complete strangers . this concert experience can't be found sitting at home to go to a gig and see have the people there in bands mech is a brilliant sight, and also highlights there is still money to be made at concerts.

When it comes to the whole debate about paying vs downloading I have to say i sit firmly in the middle. I don't feel strongly about either . i must admit however i do lie to actually own the cd but i don't want to spend 10 pounds for the privilege of it.. Which is why i would say in the music i own there is a 70/30 split between downloading and brought , this is also due to the lack of variety in stores like HMV which forces me to download more .

I fell as well that music companies are paying now from the greed they showed in the past . they over priced Cd's when it was the only really way to get music but now are struggling due to the emergence of online downloading. this is reinforced by the number of music sharing sites on the internet today . the other debate is between legal and illegal downloading again however it comes down to money why pay on iTunes when it's free somewhere else this is why I think more I  feel a number of musicians now put music on YouTube they know it will be download but they make more of people going to their channels to get the songs also it a brilliant way to gain more fans if your music is available meaning more people like it and people I think are more likely to spend money on bands they like . this trend i think can be highlight by bands like soja who put a lot of their early music in YouTube which leads to a starting of their fan base they also did the first ten years without a label ,showing the power of the internet

In conclusion they are numerous way to consume and enjoy music but it's about finding which ways suit you .

ambient sound

Ambient sound or ambient audio means the background sounds which are present in a scene or location. Common ambient sounds include wind, water, birds, crowds, office noises, traffic, etc.

Here the sound is the sounds of birds as well as the sound of the wind it creates a in my view a sense of realism meaning these are noise sure expect to hear in everyday life and to remove them from the scene would make it feel unnatural and almost fake this is why i feel realism and ambient sound more engaging to my audience it also make it easier to imagine this is a real conversation thus furthering are feeling towards certain characters .

colour design

colour design is the use of  , various colours, texture or material to communicate an emotion, mood, idea, atmosphere, tone or time period i.e Red can be used to represent red or passion, combined with other materials such as silk to create robes, these can be used to portray royalty or power, similarly red lighting can be used to communicate a romantic atmosphere if used appropriately.

lighting

available lighting- the use of only lighting  which actually exists on a location such as the sun or moon in outdoor scenes it give a scene a natural and realistic feel

artificial lighting -  it is basically the oppostite or avaiable  it is Lighting  that  is  deliberate use of to achieve a practical or aesthetic effect. Lighting includes the use of both artificial light sources  like lamps and light fixtures

key lightingThe main light on a subject. Usually placed at a 45 degree angle to the subject . In high key lighting, the key light provides all or most of the light in the scene. In low key lighting, the key light provides much less of the total light making for a much more eerie feel whereas high key creates a sense of safety .

Fill lighting -Lighting that is used to soften shadows within a scene. Used in along side   Key Lighting for more effective lighting

back lighting - Light used to illuminate the space between characters and their backgrounds allo the background to empathize distance from the the character on screen.

props

Props are thing such as weapons , phones along with other thing a very ironic prop is the sonic screwdriver used in the doctor series it is as recognizable as any of the people who have held it . props can be used for a number of reasons it can be used to added necessary affects to a scene it also creates a sense of realism to a show .

Costume and make up

costumes- Costumes can be very important especially in period dramas  int creates a sense of realism which in in useful for helping emerging the audience in the time periods it is also key that care is taken to insure that the costumes are accurate of the time meaning a electric waist watch might just seem out of place in downton abbey. also the saying of judge a book by it's cover can be extended to character in show ,say that a character is setting dressed all in black this make them far more menacing than some dressed in bright colours and also some dressed quite scruffy  is going to be less a appealing than some dressed quire smartly .

Makeup-  Makeups is important in a very aesthetic sense . meaning we perceive on how the look it's human nature but we can be influenced of how we view someone for example the joker in the recent batman movies it a very menacing and fear inducing character and the is due partly due to the make. also as we can see for the doctor who clip that is can be used to help caught character that say motion  capture can't do justice .

Set design

set design is thing like the interior of a building ant how it is done it is important to from the  set design to fit the genre and tone of the show for example a serious crime drama set in the tardis seems so off key and poorly thought it is not only important that the set design reflect the character, for example frank from shameless would seem out of place in a country manor . the set design reflect the character and yhe key aspect of their lives.

Studio

studio is simple a indoor space were interior scene are filmed  it is usual equipped with the all the devices which are important for setting both mood and the tones of scene . in a studio as oppose to shooting on the location is the are more controllable factors which can be manipulate to change the feel of a scene

Location

The location of a show is important not only to the genre of the show but also the tone. locations in modern TV dramas are becoming more important it helps engage the audience if they feel they have an understanding of the location for example many would be able to tell you  the the name of the cafe in say eastenders but couldn't tell you the name of their own local cafe . a set location such as a street or a hospital can be important in the audience developing empathy towards  the cast it can also make in feel more realistic. and also  locations become recognizable and almost ironic allowing a viewer to know a show purely by the setting.

Production Design

The overall look of a TV show  that illustrates the setting and visual style of the story. Includes the design of the sets, location choices, this is actually not only important to the tone of  a show but also the type of audience it draws for example downton abbey aims to more a more elderly audience  whereas doctor who appeals to a  younger and more sci-fi based audience this is due to the layer out of stories and the use of techniques used in filming and editing downton has a nostalgic feel which is reflect in is used of light , sound  and camera which would differ quite a lot from doctor who

Mode of adresss

The way a media product ‘speaks’ to it’s audience. In order to communicate, a producer of any text must make some assumptions about an intended audience

Incidental music

Music composed to accompany the action or dialogue of a drama.

Here the music is incredible menacing and unnerving  . it sets the scene up to full to tension ,it is a effective dramatic ploy to make the scene more interesting for the audience . it also makes the scene much more eerie and scary it is brilliant and make a scene  more enjoyable i feel without the music it wouldn't be the same

Sound bridge

At the beginning of one scene, the sound from the previous scene carries over briefly before the sound from the new scene begins

Synchronous sound

At 8.08

Audio matched to images. When the mouth moves, the words come out in sync.

there is very little to say about this . it gives the show a polished finish and make the show more enjoyable to the audience because if the audio was out of sync it would make the show unaesthically pleasing.

Themes and stings

A theme is genrally used to signal the start of a show is is desgin to be recongisible to the audienceit is key the a theme stands out and is different but can still be reconised by the audeince it is important tone at set both the theme and tone of the show as music is a very powerful way to convey a message.

Sound effects

A sound effect is a sound or sounds add to a scene usual done in post production meaning the sound is not present at the time of filming

Here the sound is a screech it is used for an shock impact to the audience as it is , in most respect complete unexpected this makes the sound very affective at displaying something is very wrong and helps set up the next stage of the story line.

Diegetic sound

Sound that comes from the world depicted in the film

Diegetic sounds is things like voices of characters and sounds made by objects in the story.
Here quite simply it is used to display a conversation between two character this scene is important on 3 elements it introduce us to some of the main character in the series ,it helps build a back story and understanding to what the audeince has seen and also it is the first time these main characters meet and it is core to how the character devlop with each other.

Dialogue

the shot is at about 32 mins

Conversation between two or more people

Here it used to display both the relationship between the character and to set up the next scene in the show .
in context to the relationship of the character i think it represents that they have mutual respect for each other also the fact the three are level would indicate they are of the same power because if one was superior you would expect them to been in front with the others following.

Voiceover

the voice on an unseen commentator in a film of television program

Here the there are two voiceovers the first is easily recognisable to the audience as it is the voice of the main character . his words set this up to have a lot of conflict and lose to the audience it is very enaging to the audience . the second is used to give out information about the show but holds no importance to the plot of characters of he show .

Thursday 11 October 2012

Sound motif

A sound effect or combination of sound effects that are associated with a particular character, setting, situation or idea through the film.

In the show in questions this motif has become in it self very ironic . it is used quite really to make the end of the show more dramatic it is used to create cliffhanger which make the show very interesting . it is also a good way to show the show has ended and create a definte end to the show

Cut

The editing of 2 shots together this between the sequences the cut marks a rapid transition between one time or space or another

Again here the technique is used to add back story to the scene it is also used in a dramatic sense to set up the next sequence of events which are going to happen it is also used to introduce a new setting to the audience  you could also say it is used a way to move on from the last scene to this thus making in used for the purpose of transition which it can be used quite well for .

Slow-motion

Slow motion or slowmo is an effect in editing whereby time appears to be slowed down

here I feel it is used for no other reason than to empathise the action taking place on screen as it does't really add to the story and to be honest just seems unneeded and pointless perhaps it is used to show a change in something physical happening off screen and to also highlight that there is danger ahead.

Rules of thirds

The guideline proposes that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections

A subject in line with these points helps creates an interest in the shot which simply centring the subject could not achieve . Here i feel it makes the shot much more interesting it also make it much more aesthetically pleasing to an audience which helps in the overall feel and immersion of the viewer  in the scene .

Tuesday 9 October 2012

Sound effects

Asynchronous sound

Non degetic sound

the non degetic sound is used at about 2 . 07

sound that the characters cannot hear and is not part of the imaginary world of the story.

here the music is used to make what is a very boring but equally important scene more engaging to the audience, because if the audience was to switch off they would miss a important interaction between the first of the main cast of characters

Superimposition

The exposure of more than one image on the same scene

Here i think the superimposition has been used to highlight the action taking place also it is also commentary    which is the pursuit or chase of the criminal in the scene it is also good at creating a dramatic sense of danger

Wipe

An effect in which an image appears to wipe off or be pushed aside by the next image

there is not much to say about this as it is used during the credits what i would say however is that it present the credits in a polished and aesthetically pleasing way and as an audience the first thing you see is the credits therefore it creates a very positive image for the show .

Action shot

An action shot is what the name wold suggest the the focus of the shot is the object in motion in this case the explosion in the background

I feel the action shot is used very well to a dramatic effect i also feel even  though we  know the show is si-fi  it creates a sense of realism in this scene atleast and is engaging to  the audience it also has a shock factor which builds the tension not only in the scene but the tension you feel at a watcher and your attachment to the character of screen .

Wednesday 3 October 2012

Dissolve

A dissolve is a gradual transition from one image to another.

Here the technique is used to show a gradually change not only between scenes but periods of time it is a effective way to change the setting of the scene without using a jump cut which is a much harsher transition therefor the scene has a more polished finish .

Fade in

fade in and fade out are Transitional tools in which the image gradually dims or the image slowly emerges from a black screen to a clear and bright picture

in this short trailer i think it is used to make the scene disjointed i believe the editor has done this purposely to add to the feel of the trailer is creates a sense of unease and unsureness . it also adds a darker tones to the show making it much more serious

cutaway

In  Editing, a cutaway shot is the interruption of a continuously filmed action by inserting a view of something else. It is usually, although not always, followed by a cut back to the first shot,

Here i believe it is used to help build a backstory to the situation but also it is used dramatically to try and create a building sense of tension and anxiousness which helps engage  the audience in the scene much more

insert

an insert is a shot of part of a scene as filmed from a different angle and/or focal length from the main shot. Inserts cover action already covered in the master shot, but emphasise a different aspect of that action due to the different framing.

I feel  that here the insert is used to empathise the arrival of the main character it also makes the scene more engaging for the audience as it give a differ point of view thus expand the scale of the problem  they face

Tuesday 2 October 2012

parallel editing

Parallel is very close to cross cutting . It is the editing between two or more scenes which often happen simultaneously but in different locations

Here it is used to show the reaction of the two character it also gives an insight into the personalities of the character we can see one is facing the problem straight on while the other has a much more cautious approach to the situation

Cross-cutting

cross-cutting - A type of editing were the point of view swicthes between events at one location and to those of another related location. It is normally used to create a dramatic sense of tension .

In this scene i feel as if this technique is used to compared the main protagonist and antagonist it is used i feel to show similarities between the two this creates a eerie sense and helps build the tension between the characters

Jump cut

An instantaneous cut from one action to another ,at first seemingly  an unrelated action. Jump cuts will usually catch the audience attention because it is such a harsh movement of camera angles

Here I believe it is used to show a change in not only time but in  settings . I do however feel it is the wrong type of shot to use as it makes the scenes feel disjointed and poorly edited which detracts for the show as a whole . however you could argue it it a quick and effective way of changing between scenes

graphic match

match cut, also called a graphic match, is a cut in editing in which  either two different objects, two different spaces, or two different compositions were  a object in the two shots graphically match, often helping to establish a strong continuity of action and linking the two shots

The shot is used as stated to link to shot together in this scene the shot are used to create almost a sense of time travel it helps set the scene and  time period of the show

Eyeline Match

it is based on the idea  that the audience will want to see what the character on-screen is seeing. The eyeline match begins with a character looking at something off-screen

The eyeline match is used typical to show what a character is looking at . it creates a sense that in some ways the character on screen are equal to each other it also builds the tension of the scene between the two characters

Reverse Shot

where one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other

In this scene i feel the shot is used to create a sense of tension between the two characters in shot it also gives a sense of perspective to the audience of the situation both faces it also shows the facial expression to each person one is smug and grinning while the other two seem  much more serious

why editing is so important ?

editing is important as it is one if the main factors in if a show will become popular. that is one of the reason i think it is important meaning if a show is poorly put together meaning poor choice of shot it is not pleasing to watch also editing is very important and displaying moods in the scene it

transition of image and sound

The transition of image is simple the merging of  scenes using a variety of cuts .  Most films will also include selective use of other transitions, usually to convey a tone or mood, suggest the passage of time, or separate parts of the story for example during a chase scene instead of just having a long shot the whole time taking differnent angles and editing the chase can make it far more exciting and enjoyable to watch thus hold the attention of the audience

The transition of sounds is used in a simlar way to the transition of image .Meaning it is very effective a convey a tone or mood . in some ways music is a much clear way of expressing emotions and the tone. there are a lot of facial expression that can be used to indicate an emotion but a sound is much clear and to the point it helps create a sense of attachment ot the character. sound is also great and setting and keeping tension
.

Focus Pull

A focus pull changes the focus of the shot from the foreground to the background or visa versa . to reveal a perviously blurred or unclear image

it this scene the focus is pulled to reveal a gun is being point at the character this creates a sense of tension and uncertain the bluriness  also helps create a sense of shock with the audiences

zoom

A zoom creates a sense of isolation and also gives a more insightful look in to how a character reacts to a particular incident of scene during a scene . the zoom is the best at expressing emotions and adds a personal feel and empathy towards the character

The zoom is used is used to give a personal fell to  scene and also helps express detail which couldn't be expressed by another   we can see the character is wearing is wearing a sheriffs badge . the clock is also  at noon  in western typically duels are held at this point.this indicates that perhaps the doctor is in a duel also the sign says grand central  from this we assume it is in the centre of town..

Thursday 13 September 2012

Framing

When a framing it put aroung a character and/or scene .

In this case the frame  seem to be the slot in a prison door guessing on what we can see of the inside wall. i think this is used to show the character are both alone and isolated in also creatws a sense of tension between the 2 character almost as if  the story between the 2 is personal

Reverse Zoom

A reverse zoom is what the name suggest . simple it is were the camera move back or away from the character and/or scene to reveil something else int the shot.

In this scene at first you think the camera is looking at the clouds but as the camera pulls
out you see it looks like perhaps an explosion. the use of the reverse zoomcatches the audience of guard and creates a sense of danger

Depth of field

Depth of field is the amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph

In this scene i feel it is used to really home  in the faces of the character in order to show the facial expression and reactions of the Character which seems puzzled

Handheld

A handheld canera is used to add a real and gritty feel to the scene/series . it can help making them feel part of the scene instead of watching with a sense of  detached and lack of personal interest .

I feel this adds  a grittiness and a sense of unease and despair. The car  ahead looks to have crash this seem to indicate a eerie feel. also the fact there is no movement  near the car would indicate something is wrong

Steadicam

The shot is between 0.14 and 0.15

a steadicam allows  for smooth and independent filming during a talking and walking scene or simple to follow a character,

Here it is used to the conversation between the two characters.

Tuesday 11 September 2012

Crane shot

Basically a crane is a large, heavy piece of equipment but is a useful way of moving the camera.

As the camera move away we see the character is isolate and alone in the middle of the a road. this is an eerie ,  in this scene the camera shot and method highlights the fact the character is alone . you geek that this is the most suitable method to use .

Sunday 9 September 2012

Dolly shot

the shot is at 0.15 secs

A technique in which the camera moves closer or further from the subject while simultaneously adjusting the zoom angle to keep the subject the same size in the frame.

Here i feel the camrea move to show us what the three characters are looking at while still keeping them in the centre of the shot .the movement is very smooth and controlled which indicates they are in control on the situations and are not panicing

Track shot

it is used at 0.2 secs

a Track shot is often defined more specifically as movement which stays a constant distance from the action, especially side-to-side movement.

In this scene the movement of the camera seems frantic and unsteady in seems to move like some one running perhaps to help someone or trying to get to cover.

Tilt movement

it is used at 0.15 secs

tilt is very similar to pan only it scans a scene vertically instead of horizontial.

Here is give us a idea of the scene as well as the character imporatant to that episode it also would indicate an uncertain of the surrounding prehaps this is some where the doctor does not feel comfortable being there .

Pan

the shot is at 1.15 secs

A movement which scans a scene horizontally. which operates as a stationary point as the camera is turned, often to follow a moving object which is kept in the middle of the frame.

in this scene the camera rotates around the character and the background seem blurred out this would indicated the focus is on the character and his expression however little ot no facical expression is displayed prehaps this would indicate tht he is deep in thought

Low angle

the shot is at 0.14 secs

A low shot is taken with the camera placed in a position below and pointing upward at the subject

In this scene the shot is used to create a very menacing atomsphere and mood is also give and insight to the setting which seems to have a wlid west feel by the way the character are standing facing each other would indicate a duel the again creats a great sense of tension and unease

canted angle

the shot is at 0.07 secs

A canted angle  is a camera shot in which the camera angle is deliberately slanted to one side. This can be used for dramatic effect and helps portray unease, disorientation, frantic or desperate action, intoxication, madness

in this scene i feel it is used to create a sense of painic and desperation . it also express the movement of the dinosaur
