foo fighters background

The Foo Fighters emerged from the ashes of Nirvana, but the band's true roots lay in the years of personal recordings made by leader Dave Grohl. The former Nirvana drummer had played guitar and written songs since he was a Washington, D.C., teenager, while also playing drums in several hardcore bands. At 17, Grohl became the drummer for the veteran punk act Scream. In 1990 he joined Nirvana, but continued to work on his own material during breaks from the road and studio. After finishing Nirvana's Nevermind, Grohl returned to D.C. to record several tracks, which were released on the cassette-only Pocketwatch. Plans for another cassette release were shelved with Kurt Cobain's 1994 suicide.
Later that year Grohl entered a studio with friend and producer Barrett Jones to record what would become the first Foo Fighters album. Grohl played all the instruments himself (with the exception of the song "X-Static," which featured guitar by Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs). Though he had written and sung just one Nirvana song (the B-side "Marigold"), Grohl demonstrated a flair for pop hooks and driving guitar rock. (The name Foo Fighters came from what American World War II pilots called unidentified fireballs spotted over Germany.) Grohl signed with Capitol and formed a band in time for a 1995 tour, recruiting bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith from the freshly-broken-up Sunny Day Real Estate. Pat Smear, the former Germs guitarist who had joined Nirvana for its final tour, also joined.
Foo Fighters (Number 23) was released in 1995 and spawned the Modern Rock hits "This Is a Call," "I'll Stick Around," and "Big Me." Goldsmith quit during the making of The Colour and the Shape (Number Ten, 1997), the first Foo Fighters album recorded as a band, and was replaced by Taylor Hawkins (Alanis Morissette). The album contained the Modern Rock hits "Monkey Wrench," "My Hero," and "Everlong." Smear quit and was briefly replaced by Franz Stahl (Scream) and then Chris Shiflett (No Use for a Name, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes), solidifying the lineup to date. Grohl relocated to Virginia and recorded There Is Nothing Left to Lose (Number 10, 1999) in his basement; the album included "Learn to Fly" (Number 13, 2000).
In 2001 the group began recording its fourth album in Los Angeles, but stopped before finishing. Grohl took a break from band-leading by getting behind the drums again for Queens of the Stone Age's 2002 album Songs for the Deaf. Refreshed, Grohl gathered the Foos back together and re-recorded almost the entire album at his Virginia home studio, released as One by One(Number Three, 2002). The album further consolidated the band's place as the well-loved elder statesmen of alt-rock.

green day background

Part of the northern Californian underground punk rock scene, Green Day was formed by childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong (lead guitar, lead vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass guitar, backing vocals). They built a cult following during the early 1990s and are credited, along with bands The Offspring and Rancid, for reviving mainstream interest in the punk rock scene. In 1994 Green Day  signed with Reprise Records, who released the band's first major-label album, 'Dookie' , which they had recorded in a mere three weeks. The album received much critical acclaim and sold over 15 million copies worldwide, winning the 1994 Grammy for Best Alternative Album

The videos for the singles 'Longview' and 'Basket Case' were nominated for numerous awards at the 1995 MTV Video Music Awards. Rolling Stone Magazine placed 'Dookie' at number 193 in their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, beating Black Sabbath's eponymous album and Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here'.

The band's next album, 'Insomniac' (1995), was much darker than the more melodic 'Dookie' and won them award nominations for Favourite Artist, Favourite Hard Rock Artist and Favourite Alternative Artist at the 1996 American Music Awards. The video for the single 'Walking Contradiction' received a Grammy nomination for Best Video, Short Film and an MTV nomination for Best Special Effects. Green Day then cancelled their European tour, claiming they were exhausted, and took a break from making music.

Following their break, they released the experimental album 'Nimrod' (1997), which was a break from their usual music and more in the style of laid-back surfer rock, silly ska, upbeat pop/punk and acoustic ballads. The surprise hit from this album 'Good Riddance (Time of your Life)' once again won them an MTV Award for Best Alternative Video

Green Day released Warning, proud that it was their strongest work together. The album received mixed reactions, with some fans believing the band was losing its relevance, despite the album producing the number one hit Minority. The album sales were not as successful as previous albums and Green Day's popularity declined somewhat.

Releasing a greatest hits compilation, 'International Superhits!' (2001), followed by a collection of B-sides called 'Shenanigans' (2002), gave impetus to the theory that Green Day's superstar days were over. The band then co-headlined The Pop Disaster Tour, with Blink-182, in an effort to restore some of their popularity. Once more, following the tour, Green Day took some time off to spend with their families.

A new album, with the working title of 'Cigarettes and Valentines', was meant for release in 2002 but after 20 tracks had been recorded, the master tapes were stolen from the studios. The band was devastated and decided not to try and recreate the album but do something better instead.

The resulting album, 'American Idiot' (2004), proved their biggest hit to date, with some referring to it as "punk rock opera". It sold 1.5 million units in its first week and went straight to number one in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Japan, following the single of the same name, which entered the UK singles charts at number three.

In 2004 the band was nominated for six Grammy Awards, with 'American Idiot' winning a Grammy for Best Rock Album. it was at this time  The band had also began to  changed their image. They stopped dyeing their hair vibrant colours, and began wearing eyeliner and black clothes with red ties onstage.

Car Chase City

Car Chase City are the band we have chosen for this project they are a 4-piece band from the Belfast area founded in January 2013  Car chase are a band heavily influenced by punk-rock and it's respective sub-genres with Encore N.I  noting "Car Chase City's unique take on American styled punk rock" the review also go on to talk about the bands "infectious enthusiasm" and their "boundless energy", Car Chase city are a band with a growing reputation and we hope to help further this reputation in our video, but I have no doubt both us as a group and the band will be more the pleased with the results. above is a photo the band which consist of (from left to right) Philip Crean(drums),Connor Mc Caffery(vocal/guitar), Gerard Mc Cann(lead vocal/guitar) and Luke Bell(bass). The bands list some of their influence as Blink-182 , Green day and Foo Fighters, these Influence give us a base to which base of research of video and artwork off.

video examples

I feel the idea portrayed in the video of playing in  small enclosed area , I feel it allows for a lot of interesting shot. the first idea is to have the band playing at a gig but have the video in reverse with the start of the video being the end of the party and the end being the beginning however this raise some obvious obstacles such as the band having to play and also sing in reverse and while this is not impossible it would make the video very difficult with an slip being easily noticed.

Another idea I have is using backstage and live  performance similar to the video 'new natives' by jim lockey and the solemn sun, Allowing the personality of the band to really drive the video, Allow the video to become very band driven negating the need for additional story lines,

cultural interest

Cultural interest
Punk/pop-punk is often associated with strong political beliefs, usual these political views are polar opposites often portrayed as far left or far right, and while the beliefs may of been  over simplified the general audience of punk/pop punk would have some political view or at least an opinion of political matters  which maybe  isn't to be expect of the genre who can often be portrayed as uneducated by the media, the audience would be very self-aware to the world around then and what is happening, punk also inspired a lot of art and fashion such as Vivienne Westwood as well as this art was inspired by punk with arts such as basquait also may early street artist where inspired by the attitudes of punk/pop-punk.

Blink-182 seems to use humour in their album artwork this embodies the care free and humorous nature  of the band, and also in a large sense the genre another thing common in the album artwork of Blink is the use of bright  and vibrate colours.
